Ypres. – Town Centre

This is the Cloth Hall in the centre of Ypres (Wipers to the Tommies). The town was heavily shelled during 1914-1918 and the Cloth Hall was virtually turned into rubble. After the War, the building was re-built using the original drawings and plans to build an exact replica. A magnificent building which now also holds, appropriately, the ‘In Flanders Fields’ Museum.

Looking out from the Cloth Hall over towards the Menin Gate Memorial seen here to centre right as the white structure in the distance.

Inside the Menin Gate Memorial. By day and by night, it is a through road into Ypres centre except for ten minutes in the evening.. At 8.00pm every night the local Fire Service trumpeter’s play the ‘Last Post’ in respect of all soldiers killed in the Ypres Salient during the 1914-1918 War. Apart from the Second World War years, this practice has continued every evening since the 1920s. Sometimes hundreds of people turn up to watch and stand in silence as a mark of respect.
