Edward Grey, 1st Viscount Grey of Falloden KG, PC, DL, FZS

b. 25 April 1862 – d. 07 September 1933

Sir Edward Grey was a British Liberal politician largely responsible for British Foreign Policy up to and in the early part of the 1914 – 1918 War.

His famous comment of the ‘lights going out all over Europe is referred to in his two volume memoirs ‘Twenty Five Years 1892-1916. In Volume Two (pg20) he recorded that a friend who had visited him at the foreign office on the evening of August 3rd 1914, reminded him of the comment Grey had previously made. They were both looking from the window into the street at the street lamps being lit. A profound statement in profound times.
